It is the shaping of metal. A malleable metal part, also referred to as blank, billet or work-piece, is molded into the required shape using multiple processes. These include hammering, upsetting, pressing, rolling, and more.
The process of forging is basically divided into two categories; namely the cold and hot forging. The process that takes place at room temperatures is known as cold forging while hot forging heats the work-piece up to 75% of its melting temperature.
In particular, hot forging encompasses the plastic deformation of a metal at temperature or strain that recrystallization occurs at the same time of deformation. For this reason, a high temperature is achieved that matches the metal’s recrystallization temperature during the process.
